Parent advice

How you can help your child develop — on and off the pitch.

Praise effort, not just results

Recognise hard work, scanning and brave decisions — not only goals or wins. Effort-focused praise builds resilience and a growth mindset.

Ask, don't tell

After a match, ask open questions: 'What did you see out there?' 'What would you do differently?' Let them solve it — that's where IQ grows.

Watch the game together

Watching pro matches builds pattern recognition. Pause and ask: 'What did the midfielder see there?' It trains their scanning.

Avoid coaching from the sideline

Shouting instructions steals their decisions. Let them play, make mistakes, and learn. Cheer effort — leave the coaching to the coaches.

Protect rest and free play

Free play and recovery are where development sticks. Overscheduling leads to burnout. Balance training with unstructured fun.

Set one focus, not five

Each week, agree on a single focus from their READPLAY plan — like 'scan before receiving'. One clear goal beats a scattered list.
